Product presentation
Styrene (Styrene, C8H8) is an organic compound formed by replacing one hydrogen atom of ethylene with benzene. The electrons of the vinyl group are conjugated with the benzene ring. It is insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol and ether, and gradually polymerizes and oxidation. Industrially, it is an important monomer of synthetic resin, ion exchange resin and synthetic rubber.
The main inhibitor in styrene is hydroquinone, which can be removed by distillation under reduced pressure. First wash with 10% NaOH once or twice, then wash with water until the water is detected to be neutral, dry with anhydrous magnesium sulfate overnight, filter and then distill under reduced pressure. Keep pumping with water pump, the temperature is about 68-70 degrees. Pure styrene is a colorless liquid. If it is polycondensed, it will turn pale yellow, and the viscosity of the liquid will also increase, so it needs to be stored at low temperature.
Application
The most important use is as a monomer for synthetic rubber and plastics.
It is used to produce styrene-butadiene rubber, polystyrene, and foamed polystyrene; it is also used to copolymerize with other monomers to produce various engineering plastics for different purposes. For example, ABS resin is obtained by copolymerization with acrylonitrile and butadiene, which is widely used in various household appliances and industries.
Styrene is mainly used in the production of styrene series resins and styrene-butadiene rubber, and is also one of the raw materials for the production of ion exchange resins and pharmaceuticals.
